Origins of AcuDetox


Developed by Dr. Michael Smith in 1974 and formalized by the National Acupuncture Detoxification Association (NADA) in 1985, AcuDetox utilizes a five-point auricular acupuncture model.

Each point addresses key body functions:

  • Sympathetic: Balances the autonomic nervous system.

  • Shen Men: Reduces anxiety and insomnia.

  • Kidney: Strengthens body functions and eases anxiety.

  • Liver: Supports liver metabolism and stabilizes mood.

  • Lung: Regulates respiration and reduces apathy.

Needles are left in place for a period of 15 minutes up to 45 mins while patients relax in a group setting.

Eligibility:

AcuDetox may not be suitable for everyone. Those on blood thinners, with bleeding disorders, pacemakers, or who are pregnant should consult a healthcare professional. Ear seeds are also available for those under 16 years or age or as an option for those who do not want needles. 

Complementary Treatments:

AcuDetox works well alongside other recovery methods, such as Medication Supported Recovery (MSR), yoga, massage, and meditation.
